Notes

For new, clean diesel fuel , ISO cleanliness codes typically fall in the ISO 18/16/13 range or cleaner when measured to ISO 4406 standards.

What That Means

ISO Code 18/16/13 corresponds to: o 4 μm particles : ≤ 2,500 particles per mL o 6 μm particles : ≤ 640 particles per mL o 14 μm particles : ≤ 80 particles per mL

This is considered very clean for bulk diesel, meeting or exceeding most OEM requirements for modern common-rail injection systems.

OEM Recommendations

• High-pressure common-rail engines often require ISO 18/16/13 or better to avoid premature wear. • Some manufacturers specify ISO 16/14/11 for optimum protection, which is cleaner than most as delivered fuel and usually requires filtration at the point of use.

Reality in the Field

• Freshly delivered diesel from suppliers can often be ISO 21/19/16 or dirtier, especially if storage tanks or delivery systems aren’t perfectly maintained. • Achieving ISO 18/16/13 or lower generally requires polishing or onboard filtration — exactly what your ELAIS system is designed to do.

Diesel Fuel Sample Analysis – Before & After ELAIS Filtration

Following the cleaning process using the ELAIS diesel fuel cleaning system , we compared a “before” and “after” fuel sample to assess removal of contaminants and water.

Before Cleaning

• Appearance: Clear and bright to the naked eye, though a slight haze was visible in photographs. • Particulate Level: Trace amount, described as dirt. • Water Content: 41 ppm dissolved water, free water = none. • Fuel Colour: Yellow. • Biological Contamination: Bacteria = negative; Fungus = negative. • Other Fuel Properties: FAME = 0.8%, Sulphur = 15 ppm. • Particle Counts: o 4 μm: 16,040 o 6 μm: 7,390 o 14 μm: 1,376

• •

ISO Code: 21/20/18

After ELAIS Cleaning

• Appearance: Clear and bright, no haze. • Particulate Level: None detected. • Particulate Description: None. • Water Content: Reduced to 20 ppm dissolved water, free water = none. • Biological Contamination: Bacteria = negative; Fungus = negative. • Fuel Colour: Yellow. • Other Fuel Properties: FAME = 0.8%, Sulphur = 11 ppm.

Note: The reduction in sulphur from 15 ppm to 11 ppm is well within the permitted ultra-low sulphur diesel specification (≤ 10– 15 ppm). The ELAIS system does not chemically alter the fuel; this minor change is attributed to normal laboratory test variation and the removal of trace sulphur-containing particulate.

Particle Counts: o 4 μm: 331 o 6 μm: 331 o 14 μm: 16

• •

ISO Code: 16/14/11

Summary of Improvement

The ELAIS system effectively eliminated detectable particulate contamination and halved the dissolved water content , while maintaining the original fuel characteristics. The slight sulphur reduction is within normal tolerances and has no operational or compliance impact. From an ISO cleanliness level of 21/20/18 before cleaning, the fuel improved to 16/14/11 after a single filtration pass — representing a significant cleanliness upgrade and improved protection for fuel system components.

Diagnosis: ACTION REQUIRED! THE PARTICLE COUNT IS RATHER HIGHER THAN TARGET (ISO 18/16/13). THE SAMPLE HAS BEEN VISUALLY INSPECTED AND FOREIGN DEBRIS IS APPARENT. ASSUMING THIS IS A REPRESENTATIVE SAMPLE, THEN STEPS NEED TO BE TAKEN TO IMPROVE THE PARTICLE COUNT AND REMOVE THE VISIBLE DEBRIS. WE RECOMMEND THE USE OF AN OFFLINE FILTRATION SYSTEM TO ACHIEVE THIS.

Key Benefits of Fuel at This Standard

• Improved EGR → Less soot, fewer blockages • Improved SCR → Lower NOx/PM, better catalyst efficiency • Improved DPF → Less soot, longer service intervals • Strengthened ESG → Emission reductions and sustainability reporting • Independently Proven → Millbrook validation of KleenFuel ELAIS performance •

Technical Highlights

1. Improved EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation)

• Challenge: Contaminated fuel → incomplete combustion → excess soot → clogged valves/coolers. • With ELAIS: ISO-clean fuel ensures more complete combustion, reducing soot build-up, lowering maintenance, and extending system efficiency.

2. Improved SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction)

• Challenge: High PM and hydrocarbons overwhelm SCR efficiency → higher AdBlue dosing and catalyst wear. • With ELAIS: Cleaner combustion lowers PM and NOx, reducing AdBlue use and extending catalyst life.

3. Improved DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter)

• Challenge: Poor-quality fuel → more soot → frequent regenerations, higher fuel use, blockages. • With ELAIS: Independent Millbrook testing showed a 12% PM reduction, leading to longer regeneration intervals, lower fuel consumption, and extended DPF life.

4. ESG Strengthening

• Impact: Cleaner combustion reduces CO, NOx, PM, and CO₂, aligning with Euro 6, Stage V, and Tier 4 Final standards. • With ELAIS: o Demonstrates measurable emission reductions o Supports accurate emissions reporting o Reinforces sustainability credentials through proactive fuel quality management

5. Millbrook Validation (Volvo B7 Bus Tests) on already test standard cleansed diesel fuel

CO reduced by 11.5% PM reduced by 12% HC reduced by 4.3%

• NOx increased slightly (+4.4%), within expected tolerance due to combustion dynamics • Fuel consumption unchanged (-0.1%), confirming no efficiency penalty in this case.

The Millbrook report illustrates the reductions in PM and CO, validating ELAIS as a proven method for improving after-treatment system performance and strengthening ESG compliance.
