Overview The KLEENOIL MS2 Micron Filtration System is a robust, portable, electric off-line filtration unit engineered for versatile oil and fuel cleaning operations. Built for durability and ease of use, the MS2 is ideal for cleaning, transferring, and conditioning hydraulic, gear, transmission, turbine, cutting fluids, and diesel fuels—all to ISO cleanliness levels cleaner than new oil. Whether used for routine maintenance, emergency service cleanses, or pre-use transfer of new oils, the MS2 delivers reliable, repeatable performance with simple ‘plug and-play’ operation.
How KLEENOIL Cellulose Depth Filtration Works KLEENOIL systems utilise advanced cellulose depth filtration , a method that far surpasses traditional surface or pleated filters used in many standard fine fluid filtration systems. Unlike surface filters that capture contaminants only on the outer layer, depth filtration uses densely packed cellulose fibres to trap particles throughout the entire filter media . This provides a dramatically larger dirt-holding capacity, longer service intervals, and the ability to capture a broader range of particle sizes. Additionally, KLEENOIL filters are designed to absorb water as well as particulate contamination—removing up to 99.95% of free and emulsified water from fluids. The result is a system that not only cleans oil to ISO 4406 codes of 14/9 or better , but also extends oil life, reduces system wear, and supports higher system reliability. Cellulose depth filtration is the gold standard for critical applications, offering the best balance of particle removal, water absorption, and operational longevity.

CASE STUDY GEARBOX OIL CLEANSING AT A-PLANT DARRINGTON
BACKGROUND
A Plant Darrington operates heavy-duty gearboxes exposed to severe contamination. These gearboxes are vital to production, yet their oil was found in a hazardous state: Too dirty to count by standard particle counters. Visible haze confirming high solid and water contamination. Severe wear metals present (Fe 59 ppm, Cu 60 ppm, Pb 38 ppm). Water content at 123 ppm — high enough to accelerate corrosion and shorten oil life. Without intervention, these conditions risked: Accelerated gearbox wear. Costly downtime from sudden failure. Shortened oil service life, requiring full drains and replacements.
THE CHALLENGE
Initial oil contamination levels exceeded particle counter calibration. Ferrous debris and moisture threatened gears and bearings. PQ (Particle Quantifier) index was 35, confirming high levels of magnetic wear particles. A solution was required to reclaim and reuse the oil safely, restore lubrication performance, and prevent equipment failure.
KLEENOIL’S SOLUTION
Kleenoil installed a bypass filtration unit (SDU9788KU85 Hydraulic system) with constant offline cleaning (“kidney-loop”) to steadily remove contaminants.
Key steps included: Continuous filtration through Kleenoil cartridges.
Use of magnetic cores to capture ferrous debris (see Figure 3). Visual checks via filter tops, acting as a “patch test” to show the debris prevented from re-entering the system (Figure 4). Sampling at 1 week and 2 weeks to track improvement.

CUSTOMER BACKGROUND
A hire company operating mobile plant for remote sites faced recurring oil contamination issues. Random and poor-quality top-ups led to severe water ingress in hydraulic tanks.
THE CHALLENGE
Oil was milky with water contamination. Lab analysis showed water content at 3199 ppm (alarm at 500 ppm). Particle count: ISO 24/22/17 (NAS 13) — very dirty. Customer wanted a quick, on-site solution during routine service.
KLEENOIL’S SOLUTION
A 2-vessel MS2 mobile filtration system was used for a 2-hour on-site demonstration cleanse . Features of Setup Flow rate : ~500 l/hr. Water retention : 750 ml per cartridge.

CASE STUDY JMT PLANT – PROVING THE VALUE OF OIL CLEANSING – IS NEW OIL CLEAN ENOUGH ?
BACKGROUND
At JMT Plant , a test cleanse was carried out to assess oil condition and demonstrate the effectiveness of Kleenoil bypass filtration. Findings showed that even “new oil” supplied to site was far from clean : Water content at 2442 ppm (over 12x higher than acceptable new oil). High particle counts (>27,000 at 4 µm). TAN (Total Acid Number) at 1.21 , suggesting oxidation or degradation. Despite being marketed as base oil, results suggested improper storage or contamination. This case reinforced that oil condition cannot be assumed — verification and fine filtration are essential .
THE CHALLENGE
“New oil” was not new in condition – high water and particle load. Used oil before Kleenoil still showed:

VISUAL EVIDENCE
Page 6–7 microscope images : “new oil” contained visible water bubbles and particulates. Before cleanse : larger fibres, heavy water droplets, and particulate contamination visible. After cleanse : water droplets minimised, particle size and volume dramatically reduced.
INTERPRETATION
New oil cannot be trusted – delivery oil was contaminated above safe levels. Kleenoil proved effective at removing fine particles (over 80% reduction across the 4–14 µm range). Additives preserved – calcium, phosphorus, zinc remained strong, proving no chemical degradation. Water remained higher than ideal – further passes or extended filtration would bring this below target. PQ index stable – wear metals not increasing, confirming no new wear was generated during cleansing.
BENEFITS OF KLEENOIL CLEANSING

BACKGROUND
Triveni installed 5 MW and 10 MW turbines at their energy-from-waste (EFW) site in Belfast. Following hydraulic system flushing, the turbines required oil reclamation to NAS 6 cleanliness standards before reliable operation could begin. Contaminated turbine oil can lead to: Premature wear of bearings and hydraulic components. System inefficiency and overheating.
Unexpected downtime and higher maintenance costs. Increased oil disposal and replacement requirements.
To address these risks, Triveni engaged Kleenoil to reclaim the oil on both turbines over a 4-day period .
THE CHALLENGE
Initial contamination levels exceeded acceptable limits (22/20/14 ISO codes). Agitation of tanks released significant contamination back into circulation (up to 23/22/18).

5 MW Turbine Oil polished from 22/20/14 → 19/17/13 (NAS 5) . Tank agitation temporarily raised contamination to 23/22/18 , but filtration restored cleanliness within 12 hours. Final particle counter reading: NAS 5 , exceeding the NAS 6 requirement. 10 MW Turbine Oil improved from 22/20/15 → 21/18/13 (NAS 6) . Independent particle counter confirmed final condition at NAS 6 . Independent Oil Analysis Laboratory results (Appendices C–E) confirmed reclaimed oil quality exceeded Triveni’s operational requirements. The “new” turbine oil analysis also highlighted that reclaimed oil was as clean or cleaner than new oil delivered to site .

Extended Oil Life: Instead of disposal, thousands of litres of turbine oil were reclaimed and reused. BACKGROUND
A specialist fleet of Conver weed-cutting boats operates across England’s canals and rivers, working up to 9 months of the year to maintain waterways. In addition to these vessels, shallow-drafted tugs and crane boats are also in continuous operation, all relying heavily on hydraulic systems. To protect these critical assets, the fleet operator has adopted Kleenoil SDU9788KU85 bypass hydraulic filtration units across the fleet.
THE CHALLENGE
The vessels run on bio hydraulic oil , which presents unique challenges: Bio oils naturally carry a small amount of moisture content . CASE STUDY VOLVO EXCAVATOR WATER CONTAMINATED HYDRAULIC OIL
CUSTOMER BACKGROUND
A Volvo excavator developed severe water contamination in its hydraulic tank (approx. 200 litres). Even after the owner had changed the oil, water trapped in shafts, cylinders, and pipework re blended back into the new oil, leaving it just as wet as before.
THE CHALLENGE
Oil was visibly milky (clear sign of emulsified water). Water content measured ISO 22/21/16 (NAS 12) — far above safe limits. New oil change failed, since residual water continued to contaminate. Owner needed a solution to remove water effectively without damaging components.
KLEENOIL’S SOLUTION
Flow rate: 1000 l/hr. Water removal capacity: 750 ml per cartridge. Multi-stage operation: Cartridges swapped as needed to cope with high contamination. Final oil quality was better than new oil (typically ISO 18/16/13, NAS 8). Independent lab analysis confirmed no water and minimal wear metals .
